18. Edward II, King of England (1)., Born 25 April 1284 at Caernavon, Wales. He was created the 1st Prince of Wales, 1301, &  succeeded his father as King, 1307. He soon showed himself to be incompetent & frivolous, falling entirely under the influence of  favourites, & his reign was occupied by struggles with the discontented barons. His invasion of Scotland in 1314, undertaken to  suppress Robert the Bruce’s revolt, resulted in disastrous defeat at the Battle of Bannockburn. He was deposed in 1327 by his wife &  her lover, Roger Mortimer, 1st Earl of March. Married  1308 Isabella (d 1358), d. of Philip IV, King of France, & his wife Joan of Navarre (She  was also a descendant of Charlemagne). Died 21 Sept. 1327 (murdered) at Berkeley Castle. Bur. Gloucester Cathedral. He had  issue:
 
19. Edward III, King of England (1)., Born 13 Nov. 1312 at Windsor. He succeeded his father nominally in 1327, but his mother  & Mortimer retained control of the Government. He forcibly assumed charge of the Government in 1330, procuring the execution of  Mortimer & removing his mother from power. He began his reign by attempting to force his suzerainty on Scotland, winning a victory  at the Battle of Halidon Hill, 1333. In 1337 he began the One Hundred Years War by claiming the French throne in right of his mother.  During the 1st stage of the War he defeated the French at the Battle of Crecy, 1346, he won naval victories at Sluys, 1340, &  Winchelsea, 1350, & captured Calais, 1347, whilst his son, the Black Prince, defeated & captured the French King at the Battle of  Poitiers, 1356. The War ended temporarily in 1360 with the Treaty of Bretigny, by which Edward surrendered his claim to the French  throne in return for Calais, Aquitaine & Gascony. After the renewal of the War in 1369 the French recaptured all the English  dominions in France but Calais, Bordeaux & Bayonne. Married  24 Jan. 1328 Philippa of Hainault (1314-1369), d. of William III, Count of  Holland, & his wife Joan, d. of Charles, Count of Valois (she was also a descendant of Charlemage) .Died 21 June 1377. Bur.  Westminster Abbey, London. He had issue (among others):


20. John "of Gaunt", Duke of Lancaster (1)., Born March 1340 at Ghent. Created Duke of Lancaster, 1362. During the last  years of his father’s reign & during the minority of Richard II he acted as head of the Government, but he provoked protests from  Parliament by the corruption of his rule.  Married  1st 19 May 1359 Blanche (1347-1369), d. of Henry, Duke of Lancaster (See Above).  Married  2nd  June 1371 Constance (d 1394), d. of Peter I, King of Castile.  Married  3rd 13 Jan. 1396 Catherine (Born 1350 & Died 10 May 1403), d. of Sir  Payne Roelt, Kt., Guienne King of Arms. Died 3 Feb. 1399 at Leicester Castle, London. He had issue by his 1st wife:
 
21. Lady Joan Beaufort (1),  married  1st Ralph Neville, 1st Earl of  WESTMORLAND (d 1425). Married  2nd Robert, 2nd Baron Ferrers,  of Wemme. Died 13 Nov. 1440. She had issue by her 1st husband:
 
22. Edward, 1st Baron Bergavenny, K.G., married  1st Elizabeth, d. of Richard Beauchamp, Earl of Worcester, & his wife Isabel le  Despencer. As a consequence of this marriage he became possessed of the castle & lands of Bergavenny, & was summoned to  Parliament as Baron Bergavenny from Sept. 1450 to 19 Aug. 1472. Married  2nd 15 Oct. 1448 Catherine, sister of John Howard, 1st Duke of  Norfolk, & d. of Sir Robert Howard, Kt., of Wiggenhall, Norfolk & his wife Lady Margaret Mowbray, d. of Thomas Mowbray, 1st Duke of  Norfolk, K.G. (she was also a descendant of Charlemagne). He was an active Yorkist, and high in the confidence of his nephew,  King Edward IV. Died 18 Oct. 1476. He had issue by his 2nd wife:
 
23. Catherine Neville., married  Robert Tanfield, of Gayton, Northants. (Born c. 1461 & Died by 29 June 1504 - he was also a  descendant of Charlemagne). She had issue:
 
24. William Tanfield, B.A., of Gayton, Northants., & Everton, Hunts., Born c. 1489. He was recorded as "aged 16" & found to be the heir of his paternal grandmother, Elizabeth Tanfield, at her Inq. P.M., 29 June 1504. He graduated B.A. from Oxford University,  1511. Married  Isabel, (Mentioned in her father’s Inq. P.M., 31 Oct. 1499. She married  2nd Richard Humphrey, of Barton Segrave, who Died 7  May 1557. Mentioned in the will of her son Francis as "Isabel Humphrey", 12 Jan. 1557/8), d. of William Staveley, M.P., of Bignell,  Oxon. & Broughton Parva, Bucks. & his wife Alice, d. of Sir John Francis, Kt., of Burley, Rutland. He was recorded as "aged 37",  1525/6. Died 6 April 1529. Will Proved at P.C.C., 1529. He had issue:
 
25. Francis Tanfield, of Gayton, Northants., Born c. 1508. He was recorded as "aged 17" in 1525/6. Married  before 13 June 1536  Bridget (mentioned in her husband’s will, 12 Jan. 1557/8. Will dated 11 Jan. 1578/9. Died 20 June 1583. Will Proved at P.C.C., 1583.  Bur. Gayton Parish Church. M.I.), d. of Richard Cave, "Gentleman", of Stanford, Northants. & his wife Margaret, d. of John Saxby,  Merchant of the Staple of Calais & of Northampton. He built Gayton Manor House in 1540. Mentioned in the will of his brother-in-law  Anthony Cave, of Chicheley, Bucks. as "my brother", 31 May 1555. Will dated 12 Jan. 1557/8 (in which he refers to "my late father  William Tanfield" & "my mother Isabel Humphrey"). "Gentleman". Died 21 Nov. 1558. Will Proved at P.C.C., 1558. Bur. Gayton  Parish Church. M.I. (marble tomb). He had issue:
 
26. Robert Tanfield, of the Middle Temple, London & Gayton, Northants., Born c. 1540. Mentioned in his father’s will, 12 Jan. 1557/8. He was recorded as being under age at his father’s death, 21 Nov. 1558. Admitted to Clement’s Inn & later admitted to the  Middle Temple, 5 May 1571. Called to the Bar, 26 Nov. 1577. Married  c. 1576 Dorothy (Born c. 1556. Mentioned in her husband’s will, 13 Oct. 1598. Bur. 25 Feb. 1613/4 at Gayton), d. of Bartholomew Tate, M.P., J.P., of Whitley, near Coventry, Warw. & Delapre,  Northants. & his 1st wife Eleanor, d. of Richard Pauncefote, J.P., of Hasfield, Glouc. (She was also a descendant of  Charlemagne). Mentioned in his mother’s will dated 11 Jan. 1578/9. Will dated 30 Oct. 1598. Bur. 4 Jan. 1598/9 at Gayton. Will  Proved at P.C.C., 1599. He had issue:
 
27. Sarah Tanfield, Bapt. 17 May 1581 at Gayton. Mentioned in her father’s will, 30 Oct. 1598. Married  28 Jan. 1603/4 at Gayton,  Richard Middlemore, "Gentleman", of Whitley, near Coventry, & Delapre, Northants. (Born c. 1567 & Bur. 3 June 1631 at  Hardingstone, Northants) (He was also a descendant of Charlemagne). Mentioned in the will of her husband, 1 June 1631, & in  the will of her brother Robert as "my loving sister Mrs Sarah Middlemore", 25 Dec. 1638. Will dated 10 Sept. 1644. Bur. 19 Sept. 1644 at Daventry, Northants. Will Proved at Northants., 23 Nov. 1644. She had issue:
 
28. Dorothy Middlemore, Born c. 1615. Mentioned in her father’s will as then being under age, 1 June 1631. Married  after 1 June  1631 & before 10 Sept. 1644 Richard Beale, of Nuneaton, Warw. (Died before 1662). Mentioned in her mother’s will, 10 Sept. 1644, & in the will of her brother Robert Middlemore as "my sister Beale" in which she received a bequest of the sum of £12, 8 May 1658. She was assessed as "Dorothy Beale, Widow" for Hearth Tax as possessing 2 hearths at Nuneaton, 1662 & 1663. Will dated  4 Aug. 1664 - witnessed by her sister Elizabeth Clarke. Bur. 5 Aug. 1664 at Nuneaton, Warw. Will Proved at Lichfield, 26 Aug. 1664.  She had issue:
 
29. Charles Beale, of Horeston Grange, in the Parish of Nuneaton, Warw., Born c. 1645. Mentioned in his mother’s will, 4 Aug.1664. Married  14 April 1670 at Nuneaton, Mary Hines (Mentioned in her husband’s will, 4 May 1699. Bur. 13 Dec. 1719 at Nuneaton – described in the register as a "widow"). He was assessed for Hearth Tax at Chilvers Coton, near Nuneaton, as possessing 2 hearths  in 1670 & 1673, & at Nuneaton as possessing 2 hearths in 1674. He leased Horeston Grange, a substantial house, from the Stratford  family from c. 1674 until his death, part of which he operated as a factory for the processing of woollen fibre. Churchwarden &  Overseer of the Poor, Nuneaton, 1688. William Neale was bound to him as an apprentice "worsted weaver & comber" at Nuneaton, 1694. He was one of the assessors of the goods of Henry Everard, whose will was Proved as Lichfield, 1695. He was an  administration surety in the estate of William Mortimer, whose will was proved at Lichfield, 1699. Will dated 4 May 1699. Bur. 7 May  1699 at Nuneaton (described in the burial register as "Charles Beale Senior"). Will Proved at Lichfield, 27 Oct. 1699. He had issue:
 
30. Middlemore Beale, of Atherstone, in the Parish of Mancetter (adjacent to Nuneaton), Warw., Bapt. 24 Feb. 1670/1 at  Nuneaton. Married  Bond dated 5 Aug. 1702 (in which he was described as "of Higham, Leics., Farmer" & his wife as a "widow"). Married  5 Aug.1702 at Nuneaton, Sarah Austin (described in the register at her marriage as "of Atherstone." She was Bur. 22 Dec. 1751 at Mancetter – described in the burial register as a "widow"). He was a member of the English Presbyterian/ Unitarian Chapel congregation at Atherstone. Bur. 1 Sept. 1729 at Mancetter, Warw. He had issue:
 
31. Charles Beale, of Atherstone, in the Parish of Mancetter, Warw., Born 15 July 1708 at Atherstone. Married  3 Oct. 1730 at Mancetter, Ann Franks (Born c. 1710 & Bur. 5 April 1778 at Mancetter). He & his wife, described as "Charles Beale of Atherstone and Ann his wife" were issued a Settlement Certificate at Coventry, Warw., 16 March 1731. As "Charles Beale, of Atherstone, Weaver" he was admitted to the Freedom of the City of Coventry, 1734. As "Charles Bail" he was listed in the Suit Roll for the manor of Atherstone, 1743. Thomas Herbert was bound to him as an apprentice tammy weaver at Atherstone, 27 Dec. 1753. He was a member of the English Presbyterian/ Unitarian Chapel congregation at Atherstone. "Tammy Weaver". Died 15 Nov. 1778. Bur. 28 Nov. 1778 at Mancetter. He had issue:
 
32. Middlemore Beale, of Atherstone, in the Parish of Mancetter, Warw., Born 9 June 1731. Married  1st 16 May 1758 at Market Bosworth, Leic., Ann Marriott (Born 1731 & Died 10 July 1765, "aged 34". Bur. Mancetter. M.I.). Married  2nd 17 Nov. 1771 at Mancetter, Sarah Morris (Born c. 1743 & Died 27 Aug. 1810, "aged 67". Bur. Mancetter. M.I.). He was a member of the English Presbyterian/Unitarian Chapel congregation at Atherstone. "Tammy Weaver". Died 4 Feb. 1777, "aged 45". Bur. 9 Feb. 1777 at Mancetter. M.I. He had issue by his 2nd wife:
 
33. Mary Beale, Born 12 Sept. 1772 at Atherstone, Warw. Bapt. 20 Sept. 1772 at Old Meeting Presbyterian Chapel, Atherstone, Warw. Married  31 March 1800 at the Congregational Chapel, Mancetter, William Townshend, "Exciseman", of Walworth, Surrey (Born Sept. 1766 at Halesowen, Salop & Died 28 Aug. 1840 at 1, St. Paul's Terrace, Walworth, Surrey) (He was also a descendant of Charlemagne).  In the marriage register she was recorded as the "daughter of Middlemore Beale ‘Tammy Weaver’ of Atherstone & Sarah his wife."  Died 17 Dec. 1828 at 1, St. Paul’s Terrace, Walworth, Surrey. She had issue:
 
34. William Townshend, of Moseley, in the Parish of King’s Norton, Worc. (part of greater Birmingham)., Born 13 Jan. 1801 at Atherstone, in the Parish of Mancetter, Warw. Bapt. 4 Feb. 1801 at the Congregational Chapel, Atherstone. Married  9 April 1831 at Croydon, Surrey, Ann (Born 30 Jan. 1806 at Croydon. Recorded as living at King’s Norton & as having been born at Croydon, 1881 Census. Died 12 Sept. 1885 at Birmingham), d. of James West, of Croydon, & his wife Elizabeth. Mentioned in the will of his brother, Edmund, 25 Aug. 1869 & in the will of his sister, Eliza, 4 Dec. 1875. Will dated 8 Jan. 1877. Recorded as living at King’s Norton & as
 having been born at Atherstone, 1881 Census. "Supervisor of Inland Revenue". Died 13 July 1881 at 155, Brighton Road, Balsall Heath, King’s Norton, Birmingham. Bur. Moseley Churchyard. Will Proved at Worc., 16 Aug. 1881. He had issue:
 
35. Joseph Townshend, of Mataura, Southland, & later Christchurch, New Zealand., Born 19 Aug. 1838 at 20, Romney Place, Maidstone, Kent. Went to Melbourne, Victoria, Australia, landed 15 Oct. 1858, & then to New Zealand, landed at Lyttelton, 1862, with his brothers Frederick & Edwin. Later joined in New Zealand by his brother Alfred, 1865. Mentioned in the will of his uncle Edmund Townshend, 25 Aug. 1869. Recorded in the New Zealand Freeholders’ List as owning rural land at Mataura valued at £1833 in 1882. Married  1st 1876 at Invercargill, Southland, Martha Haste (Died 20 Jan. 1882. s.p.). Married  2nd 25 April 1889 at Mataura, Sophia (Born 15 Sept. 1863 at Blockley, Worc., England. She married  2nd John Craig. Died 21 May 1934 at 110, Strickland Street, Christchurch, New Zealand. Bur. Sydenham Cemetery, Christchurch. M.I.), d. of Henry George Sharp, "Farmer", of Moketua, Southland, New Zealand & his wife Elizabeth, d. of Thomas Southam, "Dealer", of Blockley, Glouc., England (She was also a descendant of Charlemagne). Will dated 11 Oct. 1921. "Farmer". Died 23 Nov. 1923 at 110, Strickland Street, Christchurch, New Zealand. Bur. Sydenham Cemetery, Christchurch. M.I. Will Proved at Wellington, 7 Jan. 1924.
